Share Accessibility Barrier Feedback With Us
Accessibility means creating environments where everyone, including people with disabilities, can fully participate. When spaces and systems are accessible, people with disabilities can voice their opinions, contribute to decisions and lead in their communities on an equal basis with others.
Accessible British Columbia Act
The Accessible British Columbia Act came into effect on June 17, 2021, supporting the inclusion of over 926,000 British Columbians living with disabilities. The Accessible BC Regulation, in effect since September 1, 2022, requires the Strathcona Regional District (SRD), as a local government, to:
- Establish an Accessibility Committee
- Develop an Accessibility Plan
- Create a feedback mechanism for accessibility-related input
Strathcona Accessibility and Inclusion Advisory Committee
The Strathcona Regional District (SRD) works with its member municipalities, the Vancouver Island Regional Library, and School District 84 to advance accessibility and inclusion across the region. This shared approach helps organizations work together, avoid duplication, and make better use of resources.
In September 2023, the SRD established the Strathcona Accessibility & Inclusion Advisory Committee (SAIAC). The committee includes people with disabilities, advocates, support workers, and other community members who reflect the diversity of the region. Its role is to support participating organizations in meeting the requirements of the Accessible British Columbia Act and to help guide ongoing accessibility improvements.

Strathcona Accessibility Plan
One of the committee’s first priorities was to guide the creation of the SRD Accessibility Plan, which:
- Highlights existing accessibility initiatives and progress
- Identifies current barriers
- Outlines actions to remove those barriers
This plan represents the region’s first coordinated effort to examine accessibility across local communities. It is intended to serve as a foundation for understanding the progress made so far and identifying opportunities to enhance inclusion for people with disabilities.
Accessibility is a continuous journey. The work to improve access for people with disabilities remains essential, and there is still much to learn and apply across organizations and communities.
Ability In Perspective Video Series
The SRD’s Accessibility and Inclusion Initiatives is proud to have sponsored a series of short films which were featured at the Campbell River Festival of Film in the Fall of 2025. These videos were created with generous production support from Jolly Good Multimedia, They share the lived experiences of community members and the accessibility challenges they face, helping us all learn how to build a more inclusive region.
