Gold River

About

The Village of Gold River is a small, resource-based community on Vancouver Island, located 90 km west of Campbell River, within the traditional territory of the Mowachaht and Muchalaht First Nations. Established in 1965 as Canada’s first all-electric town with underground wiring, it quickly grew around the logging and pulp and paper industry.

Following the mill closure in 1999, Gold River transitioned toward a tourism-based economy, leveraging its stunning natural surroundings of mountains, rivers, lakes, and ocean. The village is a gateway to outdoor recreation, including the Nootka Island Trail, Elk River Trail, Crest Mountain, and access to Nootka Sound via the MV Uchuck III.

Rich in history, Gold River also provides access to Yuquot (Friendly Cove), where Captain James Cook first met Chief Maquinna in the late 1700s. Today, with a population of approximately 1,200, Gold River offers a peaceful, scenic lifestyle on the edge of Strathcona Provincial Park, British Columbia’s oldest provincial park.
