Bylaw No. 627 would establish a new service for Electoral Area B (Cortes Island) and Electoral Area C (Discovery Islands-Mainland Inlets) that would authorize public funds to be used for woodchipping activities and climate resiliency initiatives. Please see FAQ’s below for further information.
Bylaw No. 627 would establish a new service to authorize the SRD to raise funds to cover costs associated with woodchipping and climate resiliency initiatives.
According to Bylaw No. 627 a climate resiliency initiative would be any project that prepares for the impacts of climate change or reduces the area’s greenhouse gas emissions.
All costs associated with the service (if established) would be shared between Electoral Area B (Cortes Island) and Electoral Area C (Discovery Islands-Mainland Inlets) on the basis of assessed property values.
Yes, the maximum amount that can be raised annually through property taxation would be the equivalent of $0.059 per $1,000 of assessed property values within the service area. Had the service been in place for 2026 this would be about $129,234.
